CHAPTER 9

“Oh gods,” I growled.

Eve’s brow furrowed as she looked over at me. “What is it? Is there another pixie?”

Shaking my head, I jerked my chin in the direction of our archnemesis. The village square’s picturesque scene shifted from one right out of a holiday card to one out of a horror movie. The beauty was momentarily tarnished by the appearance of Lucinda and Caton. They were the last people I had hoped to see while hunting for a prison escapee. Maybe we could duck down a side street.

Any hope I had of escaping their notice vanished when Lucinda’s eyes zeroed in on us. The soft glow of the fairy lights strung above the market stalls seemed dimmer under the glare Lucinda was sending our way. She stood out uncomfortably amidst the rustic charm of the village. Her fur coat was an ostentatious statement in any setting. The crisp clacking of her heels on the cobblestone echoed like a death knell as she approached us.

“So, you’re tracking us down now? What are you, our shadow?” Faith’s voice carried a mocking lilt, her arms crossing over her chest as she appraised Lucinda’s extravagant attire with a critical eye.

Lucinda’s lips twisted into a forced smile, her cool demeanor slipping as she addressed Eve directly. “You’ve been spreading lies about me. You told your mate I attacked you when you forced my hand by being on coven property. What was I supposed to do? I had to do something to keep you from taking everything from me.” Her tone attempted casual indifference, but only highlighted her frustration.

Behind Lucinda, Caton stood like a dark sentinel. His attire was less conspicuous than Lucinda’s. His clothing was meticulously tailored as was typical for him. The lines were sharp, and his posture was rigid with military precision. His eyes flicked between us, a silent guardian to Lucinda’s flamboyance.

Eve stepped forward and stared Lucinda down. “Lucinda, your ‘inquiries’ nearly put me in the ground. You’re also delusional. We were there stopping another crisis from exposing the supernatural and ending the world as we know it. And you stand here expecting me to, what? Change Hunter’s mind? Fluttering in here dressed for a winter gala only makes you look like even more of an ass. You fucked up and now you have to deal with the consequences.” Eve’s voice was usually calm and controlled. This time it carried a steely edge.

“Yeah, Lucinda. And don’t even try to say it was an accident. Magic is all about intent, so we know you wanted to kill Eve. Besides, everyone knows there’s nothing ‘accidental’ about you,” I added, my tone dripping with sarcasm as I mirrored Faith’s defensive stance.

Lucinda’s gaze snapped to mine, the icy blue of her eyes darkening. “I didn’t come here to argue. I came to clear the air,” she insisted. Her voice rose to shrill levels and betrayed her clear vexation. It also garnered more attention we couldn’t afford. I wasn’t sure who she was trying to convince.
